Individuals are hereby invited to submit applications to present concurrent sessions at the 2019 South Carolina Council for African American Studies Conference.

Conference Theme: African American Studies in the Classroom: An Interdisciplinary Approach Purpose

The South Carolina Council for African American Studies (SCCAAS) is a professional organization for persons interested in any aspect of African American studies and its instruction. African-American studies is an inter/multidisciplinary academic field dedicated to a comprehensive study of the historical, political, and social development of African Americans in the United States. SCCAAS mission is to support integrated efforts to include African-American literature, history, politics, religion and religious studies, sociology, and many other disciplines within the humanities and social sciences in Grades K- 12 instruction.

Toward this end, SCCAAS invites proposals for presentations that demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach to teaching the African American experience in grades K-12 instruction. Such proposals should focus on innovative strategies, current best practices, educational policies, and should be classroom-ready for teachers and other conference attendees. Each session will last 1 hour. Presentations should be no longer that 50 minutes. Time should be allotted for interactive conversations between presenters and participants.

Workshops: Presentations [1 hour]
Workshop sessions during this year’s conference will focus on a variety of topics that speak to an interdisciplinary approach to teaching the African American experience in grades K-12 instruction. Such proposals should focus on innovative strategies, current best practices, educational policies, and should be classroom-ready for teachers and other conference attendees.

Criteria for selection
Applications will be evaluated and selected based on adherence to the conference theme and thoroughness of submission, relevance to current professional best practices and availability of conference space. Presenters will be notified of session acceptance no later than January 7th , 2019.

Session Length
Presentations will be concurrent sessions of 50-minutes each, designed to showcase instructional materials and present topics of interest for professional development.

Important Conference Disclosures
The Conference Steering Committee reserves the right to choose presentations based on stated criteria. Each presenter is responsible for their conference registration. Attendance at the conference is included with the presenter’s fee.
